The Lumière Family
Late 19th-Mid-20th Century | Light and Shadow from the Same Source, Acoustics at its Beginning
The Lumière brand was founded by Augustin Lumière, a descendant of a collateral branch of the Lumière family. Sharing the same roots as the main branch that pioneered cinematography, the brand inherited the family’s top-tier expertise in lighting and acoustics from its inception. While the main branch revolutionized the history of film with its cinematic cameras, the collateral branch focused on deep research and development in acoustics, specializing in the handcrafted production of wooden acoustic equipment. Through generations of exquisite craftsmanship, they became a renowned acoustic workshop in France. In 1926, with the official establishment of the Lumière Academy, the brand, leveraging its shared family heritage, simultaneously began early technical collaborations with the academy, providing equipment and technical support for film sound research and acoustic experiments. This laid the foundation for the brand’s core craftsmanship and acoustic research genes, making it a significant pioneer in early French acoustics.
1950s-60s | The New Wave: The Rise of French Acoustics
The French New Wave art movement swept across France, its innovative spirit permeating design, audiovisual media, and lifestyle. Lumière Acoustics seized this opportunity, deeply integrating French minimalist aesthetics with cutting-edge acoustic technology. Precisely capturing the New Wave cinematic demands for natural sound and spatial acoustics, they developed audio products specifically tailored for artistic creation and high-end private listening. Beyond the market, leveraging their close family ties, they also provided customized acoustic equipment and sound field tuning services for family cinemas, specifically for screening rooms and classic film production.
1970s-Early 21st Century: Shifting Times, Preserved Craftsmanship
From the 1970s onwards, the brand’s core acoustics business experienced a period of stagnation due to multiple factors, including adjustments in the European industrial landscape, changes in acoustic materials policy, and the gradual decline of the physical music market. Despite the overall slowdown in market-driven production, professional collaborations with academies and in-house cinemas continued, providing exclusive technical support and customized acoustic solutions for film education, film screenings, and spatial acoustics research. Through non-commercial in-house services, the century-old acoustic craftsmanship and technological heritage were fully preserved and passed down.
